Mammals 2

deer

A male roe deer (buck) is often grazing in the new woodland; 65-70 cm high with small branched antlers which are shed in November.

otter

Otters have existed in Britain for 12,000 years, but nearly became extinct in the 20th century. Now we are aware of otters in the valley where the water is fresh and clean. Their home is a 'holt' - a cavity in a bank, between tree roots, rocks and crevices, and the entrance may be below water level. Otters eat  fish, also occasionally frogs, birds, rats, insects and worms.

stoat

I've seen stoat twice here, in the garden and in the valley. A stoat hunts its prey along walls, ditches, hedges and through meadows. It eats rodents, rabbits and birds.

weasel

Smaller than a stoat (17 - 21 cm) a weasel will nest in old mouse or vole burrows and are small enough to hunt down the burrows of their prey, which is mainly rodents, sometimes rabbits, birds and eggs.
